Ellen MacArthur to open Oakmere's state of the art Sail Dive training centre

Solo long-distance yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur is opening a state of the art Sail Dive centre at Oakmere Community College in Liverpool.
Oakmere, which provides vocational training for local disadvantaged 13 to 19 year olds, has taken over Glaciere which offers sailing and diving tuition for young people. The venture has enabled the college to design and build the innovative Glaciere Sail Dive Centre, the only facility of its kind in the UK.
Dame Ellen MacArthur DBE will open the new centre, worth approximately £500,000, on Friday 14 August at 2pm. Guests will be able to view the superb facilities and watch demonstrations in the specifically designed training pool.
Ellen MacArthur said:
"I was really excited to be asked to open the new Glaciere centre at Oakmere Community College which is providing some brilliant facilities for local people to go sailing and diving.I will be in Liverpool as we sail round the country on The Ellen MacArthur Trust Skandia Round Britain Voyage of Discovery.”
The development of the Glaciere Sail Centre has been supported by Stepclever and YSDF. The purpose built nautical style centre features classrooms, meeting rooms, changing facilities, a retail outlet, and a 6ft deep swimming and diving training pool, and allows Oakmere to offer further accredited learning opportunities to students.
Launching under Oakmere, registered charity, the new centre will offer a variety of programmes, including PADI Diving, RYA Sailing and Power Boating to young people who want to achieve higher levels of respect, self motivation, independence and confidence.
People who have an interest in the College and who would like further details on attending the event should contact Amy Fairclough on 0151 521 3563 or email amy.fairclough@oakmere.net.
