John Syvret, Chief Executive of Cammell Laird’s congratulates Cammelll Laird Apprentice of the Year award, Paul Hynes

Apprentices from the Maritime and Engineering College in Birkenhead celebrated their success last month after receiving individual achievement awards at the college’s annual awards evening.

Among the awards given out were Apprentice of the Year, Young Engineer of the Year and Learner of the Year – Schools Programme, an award for best overall achievement by a learner enrolled in the college’s pre-apprenticeship schools’ programme for 14-16 year olds.

Frank Field MP, one of three keynote speakers, spoke to the invited audience on the importance of education and said that young people undertaking apprenticeships at the college were being given a unique opportunity to ‘bring out the best in themselves and help save the country in the process'.

Jim Teasdale, Chief Executive of the college, which is part of Mersey Maritime Group, said: “Tonight is about celebrating the achievements of our apprentices and recognising the importance of vocational skills as a route to a rewarding and well paid career.

“In the 11 years since we opened our doors to our first intake of engineering apprentices in 1998, we have heard numerous success stories of former apprentices who have progressed through the ranks to management positions, many of whom are now running their own successful businesses.

“We are recognised as a quality provider of apprenticeships and provide a real choice for young people who want to enter maritime, engineering and related industries.”

Young people who are interested in finding out more about apprenticeships programmes at the Maritime and Engineering College can contact the college on telephone: 0151 666 1028.
