TPM "train the trainer" success

Eleven teachers from Merseyside colleges and work-based learning providers successfully completed a Train the Trainer course facilitated and delivered by Tammy Vickery and Brian Quinn from Training Plus merseyside at the end of August. 100% of participants achieved the L2 Equality & Diversity Award developed by EDI in collaboration with TPM, and released in February this year.

Whilst achieving their own Level 2 qualification, participants explored effective teaching methods of delivery for dealing with issues of equality and diversity, and how best to engage 14-19 year olds on the subject. The two day course was spread over two weeks with and concluded with an exam.

The course also offered participants an insight into achieving Centre Approval from EDI to deliver the award in their own companies.

Participants evaluated the course very highly. When asked what they had enjoyed most about the course; comments included: "my own personal learning", "excellent tutor", "sharing practice and ideas with other training providers".

Training Plus merseyside has delivered this award to its apprentices since February 2009 when it was launched. Since then, over 100 learners have completed the course free-of-charge with a 93% first-time-pass rate.

Speaking to a colleague about the course, director Brian Quinn, highlighted the overall vision behind developing the award with EDI:

"We wanted to cascade the knowledge and means by which to educate young people on equality and diversity. The award gives vocational teachers an opportunity to make a further difference and supporting our young people to be respectful, inclusive future citizens".
