Scientiam apprentices recognised at awards ceremony
Successful apprentices and their employers from across Merseyside have been recognised at an awards ceremony at Bromborough's Village Hotel, held by learning provider, Scientiam.
During the evening, Scientiam managing director Mandi O’Shea appealed to more employers in the region to recruit apprentices against a backdrop of record levels of youth unemployment.
“The recession is hitting young people hardest,” she said. “There is a lost generation out there with youth unemployment is touching the million mark. But we can change that. We can make a difference. Tonight shows employers the true value of apprentices. Our winners work across sectors and prove what young people can offer – talent, enthusiasm and energy."
17 awards were presented by Sue Price, the North West Regional Director of the National Apprenticeship Service who championed Scientiam’s delivery of training.
“Scientiam is an engaging and flexible training provider and the standard of success achieved by the awarded apprentices is a shining example,” she said.
Advanced apprentice award winner, Kate Boulger started her apprentice with Scientiam in 2004 and after just 26 months training at Wallasey based John Hemmingway hairdressers completed her level two apprenticeship. Kate then moved on to her advanced apprenticeship and is currently working towards her A1 assessor qualification.
“Scientiam have offered me a lot of support and advice during my apprenticeship,” she said. “I have been a qualified hairdresser for two years now and want to move into assessment. Scientiam helped me start my career and is now helping me progress.”
Daryl Byrne managing director of DR Byrne Heating and Plumbing in Wallasey won the award for technical employer of the year after taking on three apprentices. He said apprenticeships are integral to his business.
“My business is all about word of mouth and trust,” he said. “I want my customers to be able to trust our apprentices. And this is why it is so important that we train our apprentices our way. Scientiam has helped us find young people and get them into the business early. We can then teach them and mould their skills. That way we know they will do it right and service our customer base properly.”
