MPs get their kicks on Oakmere's new hi-tech sports pitch

Steve Rotheram MP for Liverpool Walton and Andy Burnham MP for Leigh and Shadow Secretary of State for Education officially opened Oakmere Community College’s new sports pitch on Thursday 3rd March 2011.
After a quick tour of Oakmere’s vocational training facilities, they both donned the football shirts of their favourite Merseyside clubs to officially open the pitch with a ribbon cutting ceremony and then took part in a 5–a–side warm up with Oakmere students. Both Mr Rotheram and Mr Burnham, pictured right with Julie Mousley-Dean, Deputy Chief Executive of Oakmere, are local lads and keen sports fans. They enjoyed some friendly rivalry out on the Oakmere pitch as Mr Rotheram is a keen Liverpool FC supporter, whilst Mr Burnham is a lifelong Everton fan.
The 3G (3rd Generation) 5-a side multi-use pitch features artificial grass and soil, designed to replicate the playing characteristics of the real thing. The pitch is a new addition to Oakmere’s sporting facilities, which include a fitness suite, boxercise gym, sports hall, dance studio and an indoor climbing wall.
Nicola Simmons, spokesperson for Oakmere said
“The pitch is a fantastic resource for our sports courses, which are just some of the many learning opportunities on offer at Oakmere. It also enables us to complement the courses that we run as a part of our Football Foundation programme which includes FA Level 1 Coaching Qualifications. The students thought it was great that both Mr Rotheram and Mr Burnham took time out to have a chat and a kick about with them on the pitch. ”
Oakmere’s vocational training opportunities for young people aged 13-19 include Hair & Beauty, Construction, Sports and Dance, Business Administration, Catering, and Motor Vehicle . Places are available now for courses at Oakmere. For information about courses visit www.oakmere.net or contact Student Services on 0151 213 0193.
