100 apprenticeships in 100 days - three quarters there!

St Helens Chamber and St. Helens Council recently celebrated arriving at the three-quarter way mark of their 100 Apprenticeships in 100 Days challenge. Since April when the campaign started, a total of 77 new apprenticeship positions have been created in St Helens.

Thanks to funding from St Helens Council and the European Social Fund, local businesses who recruit an apprentice to fill a vacancy can access a contribution of £2500 towards wages.

Steve Gange, Chairman of St Helens Chamber, commented:  “We have been working very hard to get the message about this campaign out to local businesses and to support them in filling their vacancies.

“This new programme is aimed at providing as many local young people as possible with a good start in their working life and I’m sure everyone will agree we’ve got off to a fantastic start!”

Mark Ellis, managing director of local freight forwarders Arends International Ltd, has pledged to take on two apprentices to work in their offices.

He said: “The Chamber has always been a great support to our business so turning to them to help us with our recruitment seemed a natural choice. Recruiting apprentices allows us to meet our employment needs in a cost effective way and with the help with wages and free training it includes a great support package.”
