North West Training Council recently held its 44th annual presentation evening, celebrating another year of outstanding achievements by some of the region’s most productive and committed industry apprentices.

The event at Aintree Racecourse saw a total of 59 awards presented, giving an idea of the scope of NWTC’s training operation and the significant contribution the organisation makes to the region’s skills base.

Guests at the events included NWTC trainees, their families, companies who support and employ NWTC trainees, course tutors, the Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside (Mr Ian Meadows OBE), and the Board of NWTC. Principal guest was Stephen Tilsely, chairman of EAL.

During the event, three NWTC learners shared their experiences of the Cologne Industrial Tour, the regular exchange programme between NWTC and the Handwerkskammer. Another two apprentices assisted Shane Parkes, head of engineering workshops, in presenting an overview of a wheelchair project currently underway with Greenbank College.

Award winners

David Coogan of Knowsley Housing Trust won the title of NWTC Construction Apprentice of the Year, and was presented with the One Vision Housing Trophy, kindly donated by One Vision Housing.

The award for the NWTC Engineering Apprentice of the Year went to Edward Wadkin of Johnson Controls. Edward, an electro-magnetic maintenance apprentice, was presented with the Triumph Trophy, donated by the Triumph Motor Company in 1973. Edward (pictured above) was also crowned overall NWTC Apprentice of the Year, and presented with the silver and crystal R W Lofthouse Trophy.

Apprentice of the Year winners are chosen on the basis of their training progress, a written report they submit, and an interview with NWTC senior managers.

Outstanding progress awards went to apprentice engineer, Dennis Tanner of Konecranes, and apprentice mechanical engineer Kenneth Morris of Jaguar Land Rover.
