Hugh Baird first FE college to achieve well-being award
Hugh Baird College has become the first FE college in the country to receive the international Achievement through Well-Being Award. Formerly the Every Child Matters Standards Award, the Achievement through Well-Being Award is judged on twelve aspects, all based around the Every Child Matters agenda (ECM).
Under the principles of ECM, the aim is to offer students the support they need to:
- be healthy
- stay safe
- enjoy and achieve
- make a positive contribution
- achieve economic wellbeing
Hugh Baird College has been working on embedding these principles into everyday college life for more than six years. Examples include:
- working with external agencies to provide students with information and support on issues ranging from healthy eating and smoking cessation to sexual health and personal safety.
- offering guidance on progression routes and job opportunities
- following well established and comprehensive safeguarding/child protection procedures
- encouraging students to take part in community activities and charity fundraising
Praise from the assessors highlighted:
- very robust safeguarding procedures
- excellent health and wellbeing programme
- students treated as individuals
- high level of care offered to those with learning difficulties and/or disabilities
- positive impressions of the college by parents
Summarising their feedback report, the assessors said:
“It was an absolute pleasure and joy to work with the college over the past twelve months. We very much appreciated being given the opportunity to witness such impressive work on student wellbeing in the FE sector.”
