Definitive Liverpool City Region website for Apprenticeships launched

The Liverpool City Region (LCR) Apprenticeships Hub, which GMLPF is a member of, has launched a new website which will act as a central online resource of Apprenticeships information for the region.

The website is one of the key projects that have been developed since the LCR Hub was formed. It provides essential information about Apprenticeships to potential apprentices, employers, schools and parents. The site also contains local case studies and vacancy information as well as local news and details of upcoming events such as the forthcoming Apprenticeships Graduation at Liverpool Cathedral, and the 2nd LCR Apprenticeship Awards.

The launch of the website reflects the joined-up approach to raising awareness of Apprenticeships that the LCR Apprenticeships Hub are prioritising. It provides a central platform for the communication of consistent messaging relating to Apprenticeships, as well as a centralised call to action facility that Apprenticeships partners across the region can tap into.

GMLPF is a member of LCR Apprenticeships Hub, and keeps its members informed and involved with Hub projects and opportunities such as the recent produced Mapped Out and the forthcoming Apprenticeships Graduation Event. The other members are: Greater Merseyside Connexions Partnership, Halton Borough Council, Jobcentre Plus, Knowsley MBC, Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Colleges Association, National Apprenticeship Service, Sefton MBC, St Helens Council, and Wirral MBC

The aim of the Liverpool City Region Apprenticeship Hub is to increase local demand for Apprenticeships by working to create the best possible Apprenticeships opportunities for learners and employers in line with local priorities. The Apprenticeship Hub is responsible for identifying and agreeing the Apprenticeship Hub for the Liverpool City Region and driving forward the successfully implementation of an Apprenticeship Growth Plan.

National Apprenticeship Week 2014: 3 – 7 March 2014

The seventh annual National Apprenticeship Week takes place from 3-7 March 2014, with hundreds of events expected to take place across England.

The Week, which is co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS), is designed to celebrate Apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the economy. 

For 2014, supporters are being encouraged to organise events and activity around the theme “Great Apprenticeships” – showcasing how Apprenticeships are great for businesses, personal careers and creating opportunities for both employers and apprentices.

Some of the ways that partners, providers, schools and employers can get involved, tapping into NAS resources and support, include:

  • Pledge Apprenticeship Job Vacancies
    Use the new ‘pledgometer’ available at www.apprenticeships.org.uk in the run up to and during the week. On Friday 7th March, the National Apprenticeship Service will publish a list of all employers who have made a pledge and celebrate the overall number of pledges, providing an excellent opportunity for employer recognition and enhanced PR. A range of toolkits are available to support you to do this.

 

  • Organise a Job Swap or Back to the Floor experience
    Highly successful in 2013 in attracting both local and national media interest and NAS can help you develop a press release documenting the activity.   • Get involved in the #247apprentice
    Ask some of your apprentices to keep a video, image or twitter diary of their day and use the hashtag #247apprentice so we can help promote this more widely. Further detailed information about this is in the Employer Toolkit NAW14

 

  • Host an employer or supply chain event
    Use your business networks, contacts or supply chains to promote the benefits of Apprenticeships to other employers with the support of NAS

 

  • Arrange an Open Day at your premises
    Host an event where potential apprentices and their parents get the opportunity to see first hand the contribution Apprentices make to your business. You could link this to the ‘Made by Apprentices’ Campaign

 

  • #Madebyapprentices
    Use social media to tweet or post pictures of apprentices at work. If you would like your apprentice to be feature you can upload their photo to Flickr or Twitter using the hashtag so we can pick them up. A range of photos are also showcased on the Made by Apprentices Number 10 Pinterest page. If you aren’t on twitter but would like to be involved with this campaign, email your pictures to Ayesha@gmlpf.net who will upload them to the GMLPF twitter feed

 

  • Enter your talented Apprentices into WorldSkills UK skills competitions
    Further information is on the WorldSkills UK website

 

  • Visit and present at a local school
    Take your apprentices to educate pupils on the benefits of Apprenticeships at the same time as promoting yourself as a local employer and supporter of Apprenticeships. If you are interested in doing this Inspiring the Future can help you.

 

  • Involve your local MP:
    Invite your local MP for a workplace tour or ‘job shadow’ with some of your Apprentices. Most MPs are likely to be in their constituencies on Fridays and you could invite a journalist from your local newspaper to come along to help generate more publicity

 

  • Generate additional publicity through:
    • Contacting your local radio station and offering for you and your apprentices to come and speak during the week
    • Holding a celebratory event for any apprentices you are recruiting or who have completed
    • Developing a case study or press release that showcases how Apprenticeships have made a difference to your organisation and the people you employ

Unique opportunity for apprentices on tall ship voyage

GMLPF is sponsoring three places on board a tall ship for Merseyside apprentices to compete for the new ApprenticeShip Cup  next summer.

In June 2014, Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust (MAST) 2014 is hosting ‘The ApprenticeShip Cup’ with the support of both private and public sector employers.  This regatta will provide the opportunity to stretch and develop apprentices in a challenging but safe environment to compete for the ‘ApprenticeShip Cup’

Mersey International River Festival

8 tall ships will participate in the regatta which is scheduled to run from June 13 – 28, 2014, during the International Festival of Business in Liverpool as part of Mersey International River Festival. The ApprenticeShip Cup will culminate with an awards ceremony involving all ship crews and sponsors at the end of June.

Opportunity for apprentices training with GMLPF members

GMLPF is covering the cost of £400 each for 3 apprentices to participate in the regatta. These places are specifically for young people who are currently doing an apprenticeship with a GMLPF member. Full training will be given and apprentices will be supervised by fully qualified personnel on board.

GMLPF is encouraging its members to speak to their apprentices and find out who would like to step up to this exciting challenge of a lifetime.

Applications

To apply for one of GMLPF’s sponsored places in the Apprentice Ship Cup, apprentices should think about the skills they have already developed since starting on their apprenticeship and answer the following question:

How will the skills you have already developed on your apprenticeship come in useful when you are participating in the Apprentice Ship Cup race?

Apprentices should answer in no more than 50 words, and email their answer to ayesha@gmlpf.net by end of February 2014. 3 lucky apprentices will be chosen at the end of January and invited to visit the ship and find out how they will prepare for their exciting voyage.

GMLPF to sponsor Peter McEvoy Memorial Award

GMLPF would like to announce that it will be sponsoring a new award at the Liverpool City Region Apprenticeships Awards 2014: the Peter McEvoy Memorial Award.

The award has been introduced in recognition of the late GMLPF chairman Peter McEvoy’s unswerving commitment to supporting positive futures for Merseyside’s young people through the work he undertook via Asset Training, GMLPF and other avenues.

The award  will be presented to an apprentice who has overcome significant barriers to begin and progress on an apprenticeship.

 

GMLPF consults with members and partners on way forward

GMLPF has just completed a consultation with past and present members, potential members, stakeholders and partner organisations.

GMLPF has been in operation for almost 12 years in a sector that is experiencing significant change. Both the Board and new Chief Executive James Glendenning felt that it was appropriate to take stock. The consultation focussed on perceptions of GMLPF, whether its role and range of activities is fully understood, how the organisation might develop in future, and new opportunities on the horizon.

The consultation exercise took the form of

–       Development, dissemination and collation of an e-survey to members past and present

–       Focus groups with members of the GMLPF

–       1-1 interviews and discussions with members

–       1-1 interviews with key stakeholders

–       1-1 interviews with other partners

–       Consultation with non-members

The findings of the report are currently being collated into a final report which will be presented to the Board and Chief Executive next week. Key findings and recommendations will be shared with members and highlighted on the GMLPF website.

Chief Executive, James Glendenning outlines the reasoning behind commissioning the consultation:

“GMLPF and its members operate in a complex landscape with ever-shifting parameters. It’s vital that we keep abreast of our members’ changing needs to ensure our services are really of benefit to them. Our priorities are to position GMLPF to support our members as they deal with change, and to take up opportunities that will directly benefit them. We cannot do this without first gathering the views of those members and also from key stakeholders in our sector. I look forward to sharing the results of the consultation with members early in the new year.”

The consultation was carried out by Community Concepts.

Merchant Taylors school scoops GMLPF careers award

Schools across Merseyside had their achievements recognised and celebrated at this year’s Educate Awards, held in December at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral. The awards champion the very best in education across the region. Entries for the various awards this year surpassed all expectations and demonstrated the excellent work that our region’s schools are producing.

Career aspiration award

GMLPF sponsored the Careers Aspiration Award which recognises schools which have adopted the most innovative approach to careers information, advice and guidance for their pupils. The winner of the award went to Merchant Taylors’ Schools in Crosby who also provided the evening’s entertainment in the form of musical numbers from Les Miserables.

GMLPF CEO, James Glendenning who presented teachers from Merchant Taylors with their award on the evening, commented on the importance of this award category:

“Careers advice and guidance in schools is such a crucial aspect of children’s education. Schools are in a unique position to provide their pupils with the right information about careers and promising routes into employment. GMLPF is very proud to sponsor the Career Aspiration Award which recognises those schools that are taking their responsibilities very seriously. The entries have shown that many schools are already approaching careers advice in new and exciting ways. We look forward to more schools raising awareness of Apprenticeships as a valid route into a career alongside other more academic routes.”

Free support for schools

GMLPF and its members offer free support services to schools who want to raise awareness of Apprenticeships amongst their pupils. Services include:

  • Attendance at careers evenings and information events
  • Pupil-friendly presentations
  • Apprenticeships Q & A sessions for pupils and/or careers teachers
  • Parent workshops
  • Talks by ex-apprentices who have built successful careers
  • Resources: Apprenticeships case studies, lesson plans, leaflets

New CEO for GMLPF

Ex-apprentice, James Glendenning has recently been appointed the new chief executive of Greater Merseyside Learning Providers Federation (GMLPF).

Apprenticeship success story

James exemplifies apprenticeships success: an ex-apprentice taking the helm at an organisation which champions apprenticeships and represents over 60 apprenticeships providers. 34-year-old James started his professional career as a 16 year old apprentice employed by Merseyside Training and Enterprise Council. After completing his apprenticeship in business administration, he climbed the ladder in the Learning and Skills Council, developing specialist knowledge in vocational training management.

Engaging young people

Before joining GMLPF, James worked for Liverpool City Council on the 16 to 19 Commissioning Team. There he acquired an invaluable understanding of the issues surrounding the engagement of the region’s young people, as well as in-depth experience of commissioning public funding and contract management at a senior level.

James is looking forward to the opportunities and challenges of his new post:

“The role GMLPF plays in the region’s learning and skills landscape has grown to significant proportions. I’m really looking forward to continuing the organisation’s sterling work, whilst identifying new ways to support our members and partners to provide high quality learning and skills training for the people and businesses of Liverpool City Region.”

Consultation

One of the first tasks James is undertaking is a comprehensive consultation with its members and partners, inviting them to help shape GMLPF’s key strategic priorities for the short and long term.

“I’m very excited about our forthcoming consultation which promises to identify some very exciting opportunities. New Government policies and a challenging economy promise to keep the sector on its toes. The team at GMLPF is keen to consult with its members and partners to identify the most appropriate ways of working together to meet learning and skills needs in the region.”

GMLPF CEO Stan Pochron announces retirement

Dear colleagues, partners and friends of GMLPF,

As some of you might have heard, I shall be retiring from GMLPF at the end of July.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have contributed and worked to consolidate GMLPF into a positive force for change, development and communication across Merseyside and the region.  It is a bittersweet time. I shall be sorry to leave this beloved post and the many friends and partners who have made my working a day a delight and a challenge for improving the future of learning.

Over the past 8 years,  I have been privileged to work on your behalf to strengthen GMLPF, collate your respective concerns and represent your interests and constructive thoughts to develop Apprenticeships, learning and respect for vocational learning.

Recent acknowledgements by the Government and local agencies, now recognise that the future of our country and region, lies in the hands of dedicated and skilled professionals, such as the members of GMLPF. I am happy to confirm our collective intention to continue to help drive our economy forward and more importantly, to continue supporting the up-skilling and qualification of our region’s young people into a talented and dynamic workforce. The recent 1st Annual Apprenticeship Awards ceremony was a real delight to sponsor – an opportunity to  celebrate  the thousands of successful,  hard working Merseyside Apprentices and their providers.

I am happy to leave GMLPF in good and capable hands,  with an experienced Board of Directors and committed staff. They were recognised as being well above  average  by the recent Ofsted Report,  confirming  GMLPF as “Very Good” and going on to being outstanding!  I will have many pleasant memories to take away with me, of activities, events, occasions and indeed meetings…that have helped  shape our unique,  positive  working relationships on Merseyside.  Long may it continue and prosper!

Ex apprentice Daniel, now manager

Apprenticeship leads to management success

Daniel Callister is clear proof that an apprenticeship is an ideal foundation for a very successful career.

Daniel completed an intermediate and then an advanced apprenticeship in childcare with Liverpool learning provider, tpm in 2007. As a 17-year old apprentice, he was employed by Upton Day Nursery. Now age 27, he has just been promoted to manager of their new centre in Widnes and is very proud of the bright, spacious and well-equipped nursery he is charge of.

Technology

Daniel has dyslexia and technology has played an important part in overcoming this barrier to learning. Demonstrating an award-winning application ‘2 build a profile’ on his iPad, Dan explains:

“Technology has enabled me to access learning and helped my progression from apprenticeship to higher level qualifications. It’s vital to work responsibly with technology, particularly in a child-centred industry industry but equally important to acknowledge the useful learning, management and administration systems it provides for the modern children’s nursery”.

The app Dan uses is typical of assistive technologies that both make apprenticeships and higher learning accessible to people with dyslexia and reduce their administrative burdens. tpm help their learners identify how to make the most of these technologies to achieve success and realise their potential.

Foundation degree and professional status

Daniel recently completed his first year exams on the ‘FdA Early Years Practice’ programme at Liverpool John Moore’s University. This is a level 5 qualification is endorsed by the Children’s Workforce Development Council – CWDC. Daniel will continue to attend university 2 nights per week for another year.

Now a regular member of tpm’s childcare employer focus group, Daniel contributes to their curriculum development and quality improvements. tpm director, Brian Quinn commends Daniel’s committment:

“Dan is a beacon to all young people aspiring to professional status. He has broken traditional female stereotypes in the childcare sector, and defeated barriers to learning with dignity. We’re immensely proud of his achievements!’

Learning support

Daniel values the support he received from tpm highly:
