National Apprenticeship Week 2014: 3 – 7 March 2014

The seventh annual National Apprenticeship Week takes place from 3-7 March 2014, with hundreds of events expected to take place across England.

The Week, which is co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS), is designed to celebrate Apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the economy. 

For 2014, supporters are being encouraged to organise events and activity around the theme “Great Apprenticeships” – showcasing how Apprenticeships are great for businesses, personal careers and creating opportunities for both employers and apprentices.

Some of the ways that partners, providers, schools and employers can get involved, tapping into NAS resources and support, include:

  • Pledge Apprenticeship Job Vacancies
    Use the new ‘pledgometer’ available at in the run up to and during the week. On Friday 7th March, the National Apprenticeship Service will publish a list of all employers who have made a pledge and celebrate the overall number of pledges, providing an excellent opportunity for employer recognition and enhanced PR. A range of toolkits are available to support you to do this.


  • Organise a Job Swap or Back to the Floor experience
    Highly successful in 2013 in attracting both local and national media interest and NAS can help you develop a press release documenting the activity. There is also the potential to record a short film and upload them, for example


  • Get involved in the #247apprentice
    Ask some of your apprentices to keep a video, image or twitter diary of their day and use the hashtag #247apprentice so we can help promote this more widely. Further detailed information about this is in the Employer Toolkit NAW14


  • Host an employer or supply chain event
    Use your business networks, contacts or supply chains to promote the benefits of Apprenticeships to other employers with the support of NAS


  • Arrange an Open Day at your premises
    Host an event where potential apprentices and their parents get the opportunity to see first hand the contribution Apprentices make to your business. You could link this to the ‘Made by Apprentices’ Campaign


  • #Madebyapprentices
    Use social media to tweet or post pictures of apprentices at work. If you would like your apprentice to be feature you can upload their photo to Flickr or Twitter using the hashtag so we can pick them up. A range of photos are also showcased on the Made by Apprentices Number 10 Pinterest page. If you aren’t on twitter but would like to be involved with this campaign, email your pictures to who will upload them to the GMLPF twitter feed


  • Enter your talented Apprentices into WorldSkills UK skills competitions

  • Visit and present at a local school
    Take your apprentices to educate pupils on the benefits of Apprenticeships at the same time as promoting yourself as a local employer and supporter of Apprenticeships. If you are interested in doing this Inspiring the Future can help you.


  • Involve your local MP:
    Invite your local MP for a workplace tour or ‘job shadow’ with some of your Apprentices. Most MPs are likely to be in their constituencies on Fridays and you could invite a journalist from your local newspaper to come along to help generate more publicity


  • Generate additional publicity through:
    • Contacting your local radio station and offering for you and your apprentices to come and speak during the week
    • Holding a celebratory event for any apprentices you are recruiting or who have completed
    • Developing a case study or press release that showcases how Apprenticeships have made a difference to your organisation and the people you employ
