The first CPD session funded by the Provider Improvement Fund (PIF), Governance Training Operating in a Peer Governance Project, took place on 9th September 2021. Six individuals from five local learning providers in the process of forming and strengthening their governance arrangements attended the training session.
The session was held at Greenbank College and delivered by Carole Timperley of CT Education & Skills, following an open and competitive tendering exercise.
Course content
The three-hour course reviewed different governance models, explored what makes good governance, considered the role of a governor, and how governance forms part of the Education Inspection framework. It also provided a detailed insight into the types of skills and experience governors should bring to an organisation.
Feedback from those who attended the session was very positive, with both the training and course content scoring highly. One attendee said:
“It has developed my understanding of Governance expectations, roles and how to move forward to develop effective governance arrangements.”

Provider Improvement Fund
The Provider Improvement Fund (PIF) offers a comprehensive portfolio of CPD resources and support to all LCR-based learning providers with registered offices, employees or delivery hubs located in the region.
The programme aims to improve the quality and delivery of post-16 education, enhance the relevance of learning provision (apprenticeships in particular), build the capacity of providers, develop their performance through the review of quality assurance processes, and upskill provider employees to improve the delivery of existing and future curriculum areas.
GMLPF members and other Liverpool City Region skills providers can access a range of CPD training courses, seminars and other events free of charge as part of the PIF programme.
